RSS feeds

What are RSS feeds?

RSS feeds help you to stay in touch enabling you to receive the latest information from your favourite sites as it happens.  It saves you time and helps you to get the information you want quickly after it is published.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  Many people describe it as a ‘news feed’ that you subscribe to, in the same way that you might subscribe to a magazine that is delivered.  They contain a list of article headlines, a brief summary and clickable links to the full content on the website.

Subscribe to FGW RSS feeds to receive Live Updates and FGW News / Special Offers as they are updated on site.

Getting started...

There are two places to look for a site’s feed:

  • On the site
  • In your browser

Using your browser

Many browsers automatically check for feeds when you visit a website, and will display an RSS feed icon when they find one (as shown below). If the RSS logo appears in the URL box at the top of your browser simply double click it, choose the method subscribing and click the ‘subscribe now’ button.  You can also choose your feed reader of choice when subscribing.

If the RSS logo doesn't appear in the URL box, then your browser doesn't support RSS and you will need to get a news reader.

Using a news reader

News readers check your feeds and let you read any new articles that have been added from multiple sources. There are many different readers available for a variety of platforms, many of which are free.  Because different news readers work on different operating systems, you’ll need to choose one that’s right for you.  Here are some examples below:

Windows:

Newz Crawler
Newsgator
Awasu
Feedreader

Mac OS X:

Newsfire
NetNewsWire

Web:

Bloglines
My Yahoo!
Newsgator

Browser:
Mozilla Firefox

When a feed is available you can subscribe by clicking the RSS button that appears on the right-hand side of the page. Then drag the URL of the feed into your news reader or cut and paste the same URL into a new feed in your news reader.

Remember, it’s also really easy to delete a feed too if you find you’re not using it.
